JOHANNESBURG - Eight people have died including two pedestrians in three separate accidents in the Eastern Cape. 

One of the accidents occurred on the N2 near Phakade involving a bakkie and a truck that was carrying 12 people on Friday night. 

Six people were killed in an accident involving a truck and a bakkie that was carrying 12 people.

Five people died on the scene while a sixth person succumbed to injuries upon arrival at the hospital.

Six other people were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Spokesperson for the provincial transport department, Unathi Binqose:

“On the one that happened on the N2 near Phakade, the driver is among the deceased.”

In other separate incidents, also on Friday night, two pedestrians were knocked over by vehicles.

One was struck by a vehicle on the N2 near Dans Lodge, just outside Mthatha and another died in a hit-and-run incident in the East London CBD. 

“In the one that happened in the East London CBD, it is another case of hit and run, something that we've seen a lot of in and around the East London area.”

Police have opened cases of culpable homicide for each of the three cases.
