CAPE TOWN - African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has dismissed claims by Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis suggesting the party only chose to hold its rally in Khayelitsha because it couldn't secure larger venues in the city.

Earlier this week, Hill-Lewis revealed on social media platform X that the ANC had attempted to book the DHL Stadium in Green Point in November, but it was already fully booked.

He said this was the reason the ANC was holding its birthday rally at the Mandela Park Stadium in Khayelitsha on Saturday.

Speaking at the youth league's Peter Mokaba Memorial Lecture on Friday, Mbalula clarified that the ANC's decision to host the rally in the township was deliberate.

"The Western Cape region of the ANC wanted us to go there, we told them we are going to the township as the ANC. They said we should go to Boland and we said we are not going to Boland, we are going to Khayelitsha."
