JOHANNESBURG - The City of Joburg has started the recruitment process to find a new city manager to handle its R83 billion budget.
The municipality has been operating without a permanent accounting officer since Floyd Brink’s appointment was terminated by the courts in December.
Municipal Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu has convened a special council meeting for next Friday when councillors will vote on the appointment of Tshepo Makola as acting city manager.
Makola will act in the position while the city scrambles for a permanent replacement.
ActionSA Johannesburg caucus' chief whip, Zark Lebatlang, said it’s important the city fills the important vacancy soon.
“ActionSA believes it is critical to appoint an accounting officer that will play a critical role in stabilising the city but most importantly, in ensuring that service delivery takes centre stage.
“The City of Johannesburg needs an impartial city manager who will be able to spearhead the City of Johannesburg through the current tribulations. We demand the prioritisation of the restoration of Bree Street, addressing the water crisis, and electricity supply."
