CAPE TOWN - The five-year-old boy killed in a rival gang shootout in Manenberg to be laid to rest on Friday.

Ameer Abrahams was walking with his father to the nearest tuck shop when a stray bullet struck him.

He was rushed to Red Cross Children's Hospital on Monday but later died there.

Relatives of five-year-old Ameer said they're devastated.

His family said Ameer was so excited about starting Grade R next week.

Instead, the Abrahams family had to make the unthinkable decision of switching off the little boy's life support machines in the hospital after he was declared brain dead.

The boy's aunt, Tasneem Benjamin, said they want nothing less than life behind bars for the accused.

"We don't want them to come out because we are suffering, and they must suffer also. The law must give them the harshest punishment. They must make an example of them."

Three suspects arrested for the murder are due to face the magistrate in Athlone on Friday.
