Africa Melane welcomes Lindiwe Zulu to reflect on the ANC's 113th anniversary.

Listen below.

Wednesday 8 January marked 113 years since the founding of the African National Congress.

Celebrations are taking place throughout the week, in Cape Town - a city it lost to the Democratic Alliance (DA) nearly two decades ago.

Party leader Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to lead a rally in Khayelitsha on Saturday.

He will address supporters there and deliver the 'January 8th' speech in his capacity as leader of the ANC.

Former cabinet member Lindiwe Zulu says the president is likely to focus on the future.

"What we have to do moving forward... considering the fact that we lost some people who did not vote for the ANC...."
- Lindiwe Zulu, member - ANC NEC
"Reminding people of the journey of struggle, particularly for the Black people of South Africa to remember that we have travelled a very difficult journey."
- Lindiwe Zulu, member - ANC NEC

Ramaphosa's January 8 speech will be the first since the May 2024 elections, in which the ANC failed, for the first time since 1994, to secure an outright majority.

"We consider the fact that we came into government with no experience... We came into a country that was terribly divided, a country that had not seen any form of development in Black communities, a country where Black people had never been given the opportunity to govern."
- Lindiwe Zulu, member - ANC NEC

Zulu says what is important are the lessons that have been learned in the process of governing.

But she admits not everyone in the party has the same agenda.

"You would find that some would not necessarily follow what the ANC had said should be done because some would be there for themselves and not necessarily for the people."
- Lindiwe Zulu, member - ANC NEC
