JOHANNESBURG -  Kwaito legend Doc Shebeleza has passed away at the age of 51 in hospital after a long illness.

The artist, whose real name was Victor Bogopane, was first hospitalised in June last year and continued to battle ill health into the new year.

The kwaito sensation was known for a number of hits including Ebumnandnini, which went on to become a national anthem in the summer of 2000.

In his last known interview with Happy Dayz podcast, Doc Shebeleza said he only wanted to be remembered for his music.
