JOHANNESBURG - The Speaker of the Johannesburg council has convened an extraordinary sitting for the appointment of an acting city manager.

The Joburg municipality has been without an accounting officer since December last year after the Johannesburg High Court ruled the appointment of Floyd Brink to the position was unlawful.

The position of city manager is one of the most critical in a municipality.

The city manager is responsible for, among other things, signing off on any large contracts awarded by the municipality.

This means the city manager is effectively responsible for the city’s R83 billion annual budget.

Johannesburg Council Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu has convened the council's first meeting of the year to fill the city manager vacancy.

"This extraordinary meeting of council is to consider the ratification report which formalises the appointment of the acting city manager, Mr Tshepo Makola. The acting city manager is expected to hold office for a renewable period of three (3) months while the recruitment process for the permanent city manager is underway."

The council meeting has been set down for 17 January.
