CAPE TOWN - Hundreds of people have filled the streets of Delft in Cape Town for the African National Congress (ANC)'s one-kilometre walk for peace and security.

As part of its 113th birthday celebration, the ANC led a prayer and candlelight ceremony in the township on Thursday evening.

The township has been declared South Africa's murder capital, with residents grappling with violent and physical crimes.

ANC president, Cyril Ramaphosa, put on his takkies on Thursday evening and walked along the bustling streets of one the most dangerous townships in the country.

He was surrounded by hundreds of residents who not only wanted employment opportunities but also wanted a safer community.

Sherly de Bruyne, a frustrated community member, said she hopes Ramaphosa will do something about the issues this community.

"Unemployment and the killings. Just two days ago, a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old were shot, so we would like the president to bring back the army to our community. We also have youngsters in our community with degrees but they don't get jobs."

Ramaphosa lit a candle in the presence of excited community members who hope his visit will bring a change.
