JOHANNESBURG - The chairperson of the portfolio committee on Basic Education, Joy Maimela, has expressed concern over the legal tussle between the Information Regulator and the Department of Basic Education.
While the matter has been struck from the urgent court roll, Maimela warns that the legal challenge, related to the publication of matric results, may lead to increased anxiety amongst pupils.
The regulator unsuccessfully sought an urgent interdict to bar the department from publishing the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results.
When the clock strikes midnight next Monday, thousands of matric pupils will frantically scan newspapers to search for their examination numbers.
However, Maimela believes the legal tiff has added to the anxiety already faced by pupils.
Maimela has urged the regulator and the department to prioritise the wellbeing of matriculants.
While the regulator was dealt a blow in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, the matter has not reached finality.
For now, the tradition continues and grade 12 pupils will wake up on 14 January to their results displayed in newspapers countrywide.
This is despite claims by the regulator that the department will be guilty of non-compliance.
