CAPE TOWN - The family of a five-year-old killed in a gang shootout in Manenberg said that the boy was excited to start Grade R in a few days.

Ameer Abrahams was walking to the shop with his father when he was hit by a stray bullet on Monday.

Two women were also caught in the crossfire while sitting in front of a house on Irvine Street.

Three suspects were arrested on Wednesday.

Little Ameer's family said that he was full of life.

His aunt, Tasneem Benjamin, told EWN that the family had to switch off the machines on Wednesday.

The child was rushed to Red Cross Children's Hospital on Monday after he was caught in gang crossfire.

Relatives are appealing to the courts to make an example of the suspects who killed him.

"A lot of children die unnecessarily. We don't want them to see the daylight outside, they can rot there please. That's what we want."

Three men charged with the 5-year-old's murder are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Friday.

The child will be laid to rest on the same day.
