TSHWANE - Following the return of clean drinking tap water in some parts of Hammanskraal, the Tshwane municipality says it was an injustice the area went without for so long.

In late 2024, the municipality completed installing the Magalies Klipdrift Water treatment plant.

On Wednesday, the municipality said after extensive testing of water from the plant, it could confirm that it was safe for human consumption.

It has been over a year since the outbreak of the deadly water-borne disease cholera hit Hammanskraal, killing over 40 people.

Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya had previously said she would be the first person to drink the tap water in the area once it was deemed safe.

On Wednesday, she kept her promise.

“Today we say we do not praise the fish for swimming but it would be amiss of us not to celebrate this milestone, and we want the residents after 20 years to drink water from the taps.”

The municipality emphasised that, for now, Wards 49, 73, 74 and 75 have clean drinking water.

It said once other stages of the Klipdrift water plant are completed, more areas in Hammanskraal would get clean water.
