CAPE TOWN - A researcher for the Human Rights Watch (HRW), Zenaida Machado, says Mozambique opposition party supporters are anxious ahead of leader Venâncio Mondlane's return from exile.

Mondlane is expected back in the country on Thursday as the country prepares for the swearing-in of President Daniel Chapo next Wednesday - after a court confirmed his election victory.

A wave of violent protests erupted in October after Mondlane, the runner-up, rejected the election outcome.

Mondlane fled Mozambique the same month fearing for his life, after two of his aides were shot dead.

Almost 300 people have been killed and 500 injured since 9 October 2024.

Machado said there's tension on the ground, as Mondlane is expected to lead a new wave of protests upon his return.

"At this stage, there's a bit of anxiety because nobody knows what will happen to him when he arrives in Maputo. There is a criminal court case against him.

"He can be arrested upon his arrival, which in itself might anger his supporters. Make no mistake, thousands of people will probably make their way to the airport to welcome him."
