JOHANNESBURG - The music industry is reeling from the death of Afropop artist Winnie Khumalo, who died on Tuesday.  

According to her family, the 51-year-old artist died in hospital after a short illness.  

Renowned music producer Chicco Twala said he was shocked by her sudden death.  

Twala said he had worked with Khumalo at the start of her career when she was 15 years old.

The pair also worked together on a movie that Twala produced, Madluphuthu, in which Khumalo played a significant role.  

He said he was surprised by her death, having seen her two days ago looking healthy.  

“She did quite well for our sector. She’s one musician that was not pompous. Any time you want Winnie to come and assist you in the studio, backing vocals or anything, she was always available. I think it’s a big loss. for...”  

Twala said the industry has lost a valuable artist.
