WhatsApp is giving older smartphones the cold shoulder this year.
Meta, who owns WhatsApp, confirmed it will discontinue support for several older Android and Apple smartphones.
The changes are part of regular updates to ensure the app stays secure and functional while working on newer phones.
On 1 January 2025, phones running Android’s KitKat (version 4.4) or earlier stopped supporting WhatsApp.
Here’s a list of affected Android devices:
- Samsung – Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola – Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
- HTC – One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG – Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony – Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
From 5 May 2025, support will be pulled from iPhones running on iOS 15.1 or earlier.
This includes the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus which cannot upgrade to iOS 15.1.
