DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has made a call to leaders in society to champion campaigns against gender-based violence (GBV).

This follows a spate of incidents when men killed young women in the province.

On Monday, a man accused of killing 23-year-old Ayabonga Mjilo and burying her in his yard appeared in the magistrates court.

The premier was in court when accused kidnapper and murderer Mfanafuthi Kunene appeared in the dock.

Police said Kunene allegedly strangled Mjilo during an altercation.

Mjilo’s murder is one of many similar cases in the province in recent weeks.

Ntuli said this has to be stopped for good.

“Not in our time, so we need to stop this. We need to have a discussion all over the province of KwaZulu-Natal with every leader in the society in KZN. Whether it’s a councillor, traditional, business, or religious leader, they need to lead initiatives that will seek to end this kind of violence.”

Ntuli said the violence against women and children is denting the province’s image.
