JOHANNESBURG - Motorists are being urged to avoid the N3 highway towards Durban on Tuesday morning, as it remains closed off to traffic.

The closure follows a multi-vehicle crash near Van Reenen on Monday night that killed eighteen people.

Authorities have confirmed that five children were among those who died in the crash involving a taxi, a truck, and a light motor vehicle.

The N3 route is experiencing poor weather, including heavy mist and dangerous driving conditions, as inclement weather persists.

“All traffic is currently stacked on Van Reenen's Pass, and in the interest of the safety of motorists and the Road Incident Management System partners currently attending to the scene, Tugela Main Ramp Plaza and Tugela East Ramp Plaza have been closed to northbound traffic,” said the N3 Toll Concession’s Thania Dhoogra.
