Good Party calls on CoCT to do a better job of testing city's beach waters

CAPE TOWN - The Good Party in Cape Town has called on the municipality to do a better job of testing city beaches.

The party said an investigation by three independent experts in epidemiology and chemistry, in November and December, revealed the presence of sewage pollution on certain dates.

The Good party's Suzzette Little said that according to the report, two of the city's Blue Flag beaches, Camps Bay and Clifton, had alarming levels of Enterococci during the festive season.

Little said it's alarming that the city did not have any signage or warnings to beachgoers about the potential health risks, even in areas where bacterial counts far exceeded safety thresholds.

"This investigation raises concerns about the city's sewage treatment protocols, regulations, and monitoring. As Good, we call on the City of Cape Town to introduce a proper sampling protocol that is peer-reviewed by industry experts. The public needs real-time constant access to testing results."
