CAPE TOWN - Cape Town health authorities are appealing to parents to ensure that their child's vaccinations are on their 'to-do' list before schools reopen next week.
They believe the recent diphtheria outbreak has once again highlighted the importance of timely vaccinations.
An elderly woman died in the Riemvasmaak informal settlement in December due to a contagious bacterial infection that causes fever, breathing, and heart problems.
City of Cape Town MMC for Health, Patricia van der Ross, said they'd since ramped up vaccination rates.
"I am pleased that we are achieving our immunisation targets, but it is critical that we maintain and even improve on our coverage, to better protect vulnerable groups in our communities. The recent increase in diphtheria cases is a serious concern. Diphtheria is a preventable but life-threatening disease, and ensuring that every child is vaccinated is critical to safeguarding their health and the well-being of our communities."
