Man linked to Ayabonga Mjilo's murder abandons bail application

DURBAN - The man accused of kidnapping and murdering Ayabonga Mjilo has abandoned his bail application.
On Monday, Mfanafuthi Kunene appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court on kidnapping, murder and defeating the ends of justice.
This is in connection with the killing of the young woman who went missing on Christmas Day.
She was later found buried in the accused’s yard in the Inanda area, on Saturday.
Kunene appeared in a full courtroom packed with Mjilo’s family and friends.
Government officials including KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli were also part of the proceedings.
Through his Legal Aid lawyer, Kunene ditched his bail.
State prosecutor, Desiree Boyang asked for a postponement to investigate the case further.
“Your worship, the State wishes to have the matter adjourned for further investigations at this stage, there is still a postponement report, and DNA results that are outstanding, as well as witness statements that are still outstanding.”
The matter is set to return to court on 26 February.
