JOHANNESBURG - The African Transformation Movement (ATM) is calling for immediate action from the Free State Health Department, following a case of alleged medical negligence at Pelonomi Hospital.
The party’s reaction is to a widely publicised incident where a woman who was admitted for a hysterectomy procedure at the facility endured life-threatening medical complications.
It’s alleged the complications were a result of medical staff failing to perform due diligence during Ntswaki Adelina Mafrika’s surgery.
In April 2024, Mafrika was admitted for a hysterectomy procedure intended to prevent future health complications, including cancer.
According to ATM, Mafrika was mistreated by staff at Pelonomi Hospital and developed a damaged bladder from an allegedly botched incision that left a swab in her body.
The party is calling for immediate action from the health department in the province.
"[We are calling for] A thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Mafrika's surgeries and subsequent treatment, ensuring transparency throughout the process, immediate compensation for Ms Mafrika for the medical negligence she has experienced, including coverage for her extensive medical expenses and compensation for lost wages."
