CAPE TOWN - African National Congress (ANC) deputy president, Paul Mashatile, has promised to engage the national transport minister on the issue of minibus taxi impoundments raised by taxi owners in Mfuleni, Cape Town.

Mashatile visited the taxi rank to engage with commuters and taxi operators as part of the ANC's January 8 build-up mobilisation programme.

The ANC has deployed several senior officials to hit the ground and convince residents of the Western Cape to attend its 113th birthday rally in Khayelitsha on Saturday.

In October last year, renewed tensions over taxi impoundments resurfaced after SANTACO accused City of Cape Town traffic officers of unfairly targeting taxi operators.

ANC deputy president, Paul Mashatile: "One of the taxi leaders here was telling us that their taxis are being impounded when they transport people to Sea Point. So we have noted that because they wanted us to raise it with the minister of transport."
