JOHANNESBURG - Two young men believed to be behind the brutal murder of a police officer in Eastern Cape are expected to appear in court soon.

Officer Callan Andrews was murdered while attending a complaint in Gelvandale, Gqeberha.

Authorities said the assailants grabbed the 29-year-old officer’s service weapon and shot him on New Year’s Eve.

Provincial Hawks spokesperson Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said the duo – aged 17 and 18 – was arrested on Saturday.

“Constable Callan Andrews, attached to Gelvandale Police Station, was brutally murdered whilst on duty on 31 December 2024 by the alleged suspects.

“During the time of the incident, the officer was at Voisen Road, Katanga, Gelvandale in Gqeberha, attending to a complaint where an unknown suspect reportedly grabbed his service pistol and fatally wounded him. The police official was rushed to the nearest hospital where he was declared deceased as he succumbed to a bullet wound.”

The pair, charged with murder and robbery, is expected to appear before the Gelvandale Magistrates Court on Monday.
