CAPE TOWN - On day two of the popular Kaapse Klopse, also known as Tweede Nuwe Jaar Parade.
Over 100,000 spectators descended on Cape Town to witness the annual celebration.

Organisers say 18 minstrel troupes, featuring 20,000 participants, are taking part in this year’s festivities.

The carnival association's director, Muneeb Gambino, said that the Tweede Nuwe Jaar is more than just a celebration; it is a significant part of coloured culture that unifies all races in the Western Cape.

"Kaapse Klopse, or Cape Minstrels in satin suits, in painted faces... in 1907, we had the first formal carnival in partnership with the City of Cape Town. Ever since we have had a carnival, either than during the Group Areas Act where we could not perform on our traditional route towards Green Point."

Deputy Cape Town Mayor Eddie Andrews said the carnival has introduced important lessons over the years.

"It's a lot more than the troupes and the colourful parade we have here. But for us to leave here pondering on what is my contribution towards that future... I recognise the past but also [the] resilience aspect onboard that and contribute towards the democratic dispensation."
