JOHANNESBURG - Build One South Africa (BOSA) has welcomed a court ruling invalidating the expansion of Joburg’s mayor and speaker’s security detail.
The party said it has always been clear about its stance against VIP protection.
Recently the Johannesburg High Court found that the council's March 2024 decision regarding its VIP risk management policy was unlawful and unconstitutional.
Reports suggest that the council assigned the mayor 10 bodyguards and a fleet of six vehicles while the speaker received eight bodyguards and five cars, a statement the city has since been labelled as misleading.
BOSA's spokesperson, Roger Solomon, said that the government spends large sums on protection services – funds that could be channelled to serving the residents.
"Government spends over R2 billion a year in protection for politicians, and we must redirect these funds to funding frontline services like education, the police, and healthcare.”
