CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Health Department said 51,833 patients sought emergency care at hospitals in the province from 20 December to 2 January.  

The department's chief operating officer, Saadiq Kariem, said on New Year's Day emergency centres saw 8,194 admissions, including 2,549 trauma cases.

“These figures remain in line with previous years and reflect the consistent and sustained pressure on healthcare services."  

Kariem also has a message for healthcare staffers who worked over the peak season: "I'd like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all our emergency care personnel across the province, including the many volunteers, for your unwavering professionalism and compassion during this festive season. Thank you very, very much."
