In Eastern Cape alone, 455 people were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence, while the highest speed recorded was in Limpopo, where a motorist was caught driving at 209 kilometres per hour in a 120 km/h zone.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane confirmed that the arrests were made between 1 December 2024 and 1 January.
He urged all motorists to remain cautious and follow the rules of the road.
“There have also been arrests of pedestrians who have been caught crossing the road, or jaywalking, on dangerous routes. Therefore, the RTMC calls on motorists to be extra vigilant, to be patient, and to respect the rules of the roads.”
