CAPE TOWN - A search operation is underway for a Cape Town teenager who went missing at Tsaarsbank picnic site, at the West Coast National Park, after a drowning incident.

The 16-year-old was on holiday with family and friends, when he appeared to be in distress after being caught in a rip current while swimming within the surf zone on Thursday.

His sister's partner attempted to rescue the boy but he also got caught in the current.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), law enforcement and SANParks rangers launched a rescue operation and located the 22-year-old man who attempted to rescue the boy.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said that the search continues for the missing boy.

"During the search, the 22-year-old man was located in the surf zone and was rescued onto an NSRI rescue craft. An extensive air, sea and shoreline search has revealed no signs of the missing teenager. Water police and diving services are continuing in an ongoing search, assisted by the Sanparks rangers."
