JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Water said it has various infrastructure projects underway and lined up to tackle the ongoing water woes.
It added that a new reservoir and tower in Birkston is scheduled for completion in April 2025.
The new reservoir is set to boost supply to the entity’s Commando system, which comprises Birkston, Hursthill, and Crosby.
Johannesburg Water said it is currently repairing 42 reservoirs—22 have been prioritised for an urgent consultant review.
"The procurement of a panel of contractors is in progress with the intention to start repairs in the current financial year, likely in February this year," said the entity’s Nombuso Shabalala.
“We also do regular planned and unplanned day-to-day maintenance on our infrastructure, and this is on an ongoing basis."
Johannesburg Water said getting financial help from the National Treasury will fix its R20 billion debt, which will assist the utility to get the resources it needs to provide a reliable water supply to the city.
The entity said a turnaround strategy, which includes exploring private partnerships to get funding and expert help to enhance infrastructure maintenance as well as reduce water wastage, is being considered.
Johannesburg Water further added that a collaboration with the Department of Water and Sanitation to establish a multi-stakeholder platform has been formed to work together to improve access to safe water in the municipality.
"National Treasury and the Department of Water and Sanitation have pledged support to Johannesburg Water’s initiatives. Efforts are also underway to secure additional funding and implement a turnaround strategy aimed at improving water supply services,” said Shabalala.
