City of Cape Town attended to 11 fires at informal settlements in two weeks

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town said it attended to 11 disastrous fires at several informal settlements over two weeks.
It said the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Langa experienced the most destructive fire over the festive season.

The fire broke out in the area on Boxing Day and left over 600 people with only the clothes on their backs.
The city’s Fire and Rescue Service’s Jermaine Carelse said that the blaze destroyed 297 informal settlements.
“We, as the city and the fire and rescue services, have done a lot with education and putting the word out with preventative measures. Janine Willemanse, was instrumental in developing a QR code that was circulated in the newspaper and even on the city’s website for how people can deal when there is an emergency or take preventative action."
