JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) said it only attended to one fatal shooting at their makeshift clinic in Hillbrow on New Year's Eve.
The clinic was placed at the Hillbrow police station to deal more speedily with possible New Year's Eve injuries.
The EMS team was accompanied by other law enforcement agents because Hillbrow is categorised as a red zone due to its high crime rate.
Alcohol sales were also banned in Johannesburg's inner city from 6 pm.
Gauteng EMS's Donald Baloyi said the clinic saw eight patients and lost one.
“Assaults, whereby you get either stabbings, shootings, and then others were due to objects that were thrown from the flats. We had seen one child that was hit by an object, but fortunately, the injury was minor, and he was treated and discharged. There were about six stabbings, and then there was one shooting that was fatal. It was a female that was shot and, unfortunately, passed away.”
