JOHANNESBURG - Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu says combating gender-based violence (GBV) requires victims to report the abuse.

This follows the murder of two women in separate incidents in the Eastern Cape.

A 32-year-old Qumbu man stands accused of killing his 24-year-old wife on Monday, claiming she was unfaithful.

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old is accused of strangling his girlfriend with a belt.

An angry mob retaliated, beating the man in anger.

He is currently in hospital under police guard and will appear in court soon.

The police minister's spokesperson, Kamogelo Mogotsi, said, “Based on the crime statistics released by the SAPS [South African Police Service], GBV is a national priority crime which requires specialised skills.

“The eradication of GBV will require a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, as the SAPS only enters the fray once a victim had opened a case and the perpetrator is charged. The SAPS has excelled in ensuring that thorough investigations are conducted and that perpetrators face the full might of the law.”
