JOHANNESBURG - A major-general in the Department of Defence is under fire for irregularly hiring an unqualified intern to a senior position.

Chief director of human resource management, Nomsa Mkhize, hired Madumetja Tsela as a senior secretary despite him not meeting the requirements for the position.

This is contained in a recently released Public Protector's investigation report.

In the Public Protector's report, it said that Tsela first joined the Department of Defence as a secretary intern in 2018.

A year later, Tsela applied for a job as a senior secretary.

The report shows that Tsela scored the fourth most points among the interviewed candidates.

Tsela also didn’t have the three years minimum work experience required for the position.

Despite this, Mkhize approved the appointment of Tsela.

The Public Protector said that Tsela's appointment was unlawful and has also instructed the director-general to take action against Mkhize.
