CAPE TOWN - The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is warning beachgoers of a new moon tide, which it says will impact ocean tides.
It said rip currents would be stronger and water levels would rise significantly during high tide.
The NSRI’s Andrew Ingram said this posed a threat to all swimmers as well as coastal hikers, fishermen and boat riders.

He appealed to the public to be wise in choosing where to swim and to practice water safety.
“Dangerous currents and rip currents most people find very difficult to see, and for this reason, we are asking that people choose to go to a beach where lifeguards are on duty and go into the water between the flags”
Ingram said parents should also prioritise the safety of their children, especially around water.
“And we are appealing to the public, parents and caregivers to please watch their children when near water. When children are in water, you should be an arm's length away so that you can help them very quickly if they need help”
He also warned that alcohol and water did not mix.
“The NSRI is appealing to people to please not drink alcohol and go into the water or swim or boat. By drinking alcohol and going into the water, you are putting your life at serious risk.”
