JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have sent a stern warning to residents ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations on Tuesday.
Provincial police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said a no-nonsense approach will be taken across all spheres, including roads, public spaces and residential areas.
Hot spots for crime in the province include Hillbrow in Johannesburg, which has in the past seen violent flare-ups on New Year’s Eve.
Mthombeni said through intelligence-driven operations and heightened visibility, police have made progress in the fight against crime.
He said the mandate on Tuesday is for officers to continue to maintain law and order.
“We do have enough workforce integrated in order to make sure that communities are and feel safe... we know in Gauteng we have in the three metros, there we are fully packed of not less than 10,000 workforces,” he said adding that the bolstering of policing was agreed upon by the Cabinet.
