CAPE TOWN - Cape Town's annual Kaapse Klopse street parade is set to be held on Saturday to ring in the new year for the Mother City.

The Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association has partnered with the City of Cape Town and Hollywoodbets to showcase two events: the annual Kaapse Klopse competitions at Athlone Stadium on New Year's Day and the Cape Town street parade on Saturday.

Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association director Muneeb Gambeno said both events promise to showcase the best of Cape Town’s vibrant heritage, music and traditions.

"The one is the street parade in Cape Town that traditionally takes place on the 2nd of January. This year, of course, we are having it on the fourth of January because the 2nd of January coincides with the start of Jumu’ah on the Thursday."

The street parade will see over 20,000 performers from 18 minstrel troupes parade through Cape Town's CBD.

Gambeno said the competition element of the Klopse parade will take place over five weeks, starting on Wednesday at an already sold-out Athlone Stadium.
