Mozambique is facing post-election protests following accusations of vote rigging and the Constitutional Council's Monday ruling confirming Frelimo's electoral victory at 65%, declaring Daniel Chapo as president.

JOHANNESBURG - The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) is calling for peace and stability in Mozambique.  

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) country is facing post-election protests following accusations of vote rigging and the Constitutional Council's Monday ruling confirming Frelimo's electoral victory at 65%, declaring Daniel Chapo as president.

Ongoing violence has resulted in the escape of 6,000 prisoners from Maputo Central Prison and the deaths of numerous people.  

Speaking on behalf of PAP's chairperson of the southern caucus, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party national spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhela said: "We believe that a sustainable solution can also be found through the collaborative intervention of SADC and the African Union. 

"As the Southern African region, we stand in solidarity with the people of Mozambique and call for a speedy resolution to the current conflict."
