LUSIKISIKI - A mass shooting in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape in September this year, sent shockwaves throughout the country.
Seventeen people were shot and killed execution-style in Ngobozana village in the early hours of a Satuday morning.
An 18th victim died a day after the incident.
Police moved swiftly to make arrests and the families of the victims have expressed relief as the case linked to their loved ones moves forward.
News of the Lusikisiki massacre was met with great shock, drawing the attention of top police officials, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who vowed to seek justice for the victims.
Within a month, police arrested seven men, including a prisoner, believed to be the mastermind behind the killings.
And in November the court heard that the case was ready for trial.
Speaking on behalf of the families, David King said that they were looking forward to a peaceful festive season.
"As families, we are relieved that the case is ready for trial. We hope the court process continues smoothly so we can finally understand what led to the tragic deaths of our loved ones."
The trial will take place at the Lusikisiki Regional Court and has been set down for two weeks, starting in February 2025.
