JOHANNESBURG - Police have tracked down and arrested a constable who is linked to the murder of a 35-year-old man in Protea Glen, Soweto.
The constable, who works for the railway protection services at Park Station in Johannesburg, was on the run after he allegedly shot and killed the man on Thursday.
It's understood that the victim was in his home watching a soccer match with his brother when he received a phone call asking him to come outside.
He was then allegedly shot by the caller, who was in full police uniform, before fleeing the scene.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said the accused officer was meant to report to work that evening but never arrived.
"The search for the officer led the investigating team to his hideout in Atteridgeville, Tshwane, where he was arrested just after," said IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping.
"The accused officer is expected to appear before the Protea Magistrates Court on Monday, the 30th of December 2024. The murder weapon will also be taken to the forensic laboratory for analysis."
