JOHANNESBURG - Limpopo Police Commissioner Thembi Hadebe is pleading with mothers to not lose sight of their young daughters.

Her call follows the arrest of a 28-year-old man who has been charged with the statutory rape of a 13-year-old who gave birth on Christmas Day.

A Phakama Digest study reveals that more than 30% of South African teens end up falling pregnant.

Commissioner Hadebe issued this special message.

"I want to send a message to women who leave children. Yes, though we understand they leave them to go and look for better opportunities to feed their families, but at the same time, they should not lose sight to keep tabs on their young girls, particularly young girls in the province of Limpopo are really affected by this scourge."
