Thousands of prison inmates escaped amid demonstrations following the country’s Constitutional Council's ruling that affirmed FRELIMO’s electoral victory at 65% and declared Daniel Chapo president.
The ATM party's Zama Ntshona warned that any further failure to address the issues could lead to a severe humanitarian crisis and more economic woes for the region.
"The potential implications of a prolonged unrest, including increased immigration pressures and cross-border criminality, must be taken seriously. The recent prison riots leading to the escape of over 1,500 prisoners, including individuals convicted of terrorism, heighten the urgency of the intervention. The ATM also urges SADC, along with the African Union, to prioritise a coordinated response to ensure the protection of human rights and the restoration of democratic norms in Mozambique."
