CAPE TOWN - One of the girls who were airlifted to hospital following a drowning incident in Camps Bay this week has died.

The two girls, aged 12 and 13, were pulled from the water by lifeguards on Monday afternoon.

Both girls were unresponsive.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said lifeguards tried to resuscitate the girls on the scene after which they were airlifted to hospital.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said that while the 13-year-old succumbed to her injuries, the 12-year-old was still receiving treatment.

"It appears that a group of children from Khayelitsha, at the beach with carers, were swimming in the tidal pool when the two girls were discovered to be floating in the water unresponsive. On behalf of all services involved, condolences are conveyed to the family and friends of the deceased child."
