JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng's emergency medical services says it's responded to more than 40,000 cases since the beginning of the holiday period, surpassing responses recorded last year.
Acting chief director, Ruben Ruiters, shared the statistics during an oversight visit at the emergency medical operation centre.
Ruiters said that while the number was high, it was an improvement and attributed this to better response times.
An incident report showed that 23,000 of the cases were medical related, while more than 13,000 were attributed to inter-facility transfers.
Ruiters added that trauma calls accounted for more than 7,000 cases and accidents contributed to more than 2,000 cases.
"There is a significant growth in our ability in being accessed to the communities out there. And we are also doing it on a monthly basis for the current financial year. We keep on monitoring per station per district performance so that we can engage immediately."
