JOHANNESBURG - Deputy President Paul Mashatile said that government was committed to tackling the socioeconomic woes faced by South Africans.
The country marked 30 years of democracy in 2024. However, South Africa remains one of the most unequal societies in the world, with many facing economic challenges.
Despite the gains that have been made, millions still languish in poverty and remain unemployed.
Delivering a Christmas message to the nation on Tuesday, the deputy president said that the May polls were a call for change by South Africans.
Mashatile said that government was implementing plans to ensure inclusive economic growth to create jobs and had invested significantly in the social wage package to reduce inequality and address the worst effects of poverty.
"This package includes free basic services, health, education, and social housing for the poor, as well as extensive social security grants for the elderly and other vulnerable groups in our communities."
