On Monday night, officers working with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) issued over R10,000 worth of fines during its night operation.
The law enforcement agencies monitored the dark streets of Johannesburg on Monday night, where areas of interest, such as Yeoville and Hillbrow, were in focus.
Police conducted stop-and-search operations while pedestrians suspected of suspicious activity were searched.
Fines issued included those for driver's licences, broken windscreens, driving in oncoming traffic and other violations.
Strategic advisor to the MMC of Public Safety, David Tembe, said that the operation was necessary.
"The most important thing is visibility. When the people see the police, they don’t commit crime. Ours is not to go out there and respond to calls. We need to prevent it by high visibility, so that’s the purpose of today."
He said the operation would not be reserved only for the festive season.
