Police say spotlight on GBV, carjacking during festive season

JOHANNESBURG - The police ministry says combatting gender-based violence (GBV) is a top priority this festive season.
In the aftermath of 16 Days of Activism, two gruesome cases of gender-based violence have resulted in the killings of intimate partners in Kwazulu-Natal.
The first case was in Umzinto, where a man murdered his girlfriend and confessed on social media, before taking killing himself.

In a separate incident, a man in uMgababa also killed his partner and child before taking his own life.
Speaking at an Eastern Cape Safer Festive Season inspection, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu said that GBV was among their main concerns these holidays.
Police will also keep a close eye on carjackings, robbery of residential and business properties. Other focus areas include enhancing security and working together with traffic and metro police officials to heighten police visibility along major routes.
