JOHANNESBURG - Lobby group Save South Africa Civic Movement has called for the sale of condoms at spaza shops to be suspended immediately.
This follows claims that counterfeit condoms are on the shelves at some spaza shops in Sunnyside in Pretoria.
Counterfeit condoms are not certified by the SA Bureau of Standards through quality control tests to provide the required protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies.
The spokesperson for Save South Africa Civic Movement - Tebogo Mashilompane – says the Department of Health (DoH) must address the matter urgently.
“While we welcome the commitment to investigate the matter by the department, it is of importance that while investigations are underway, the selling of condoms by Spaza shops should be suspended in order to protect the innocent users.”
The latest calls come as the country continues to grapple with food-borne illnesses due to contaminated goods bought from spaza shops.
Earlier in the year - the DoH also raised concerns about the sale of high schedule medication that is not authorised for trade.
