CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police said the man who died in Bishop Lavis complained of chest pains and collapsed while being questioned by Anti-Gang Unit members.
According to police reports, the Anti-Gang Unit received information about a firearm kept at his home on Hydrangea Street in Kalksteenfontein on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, the sub-council chairperson in the area, Angus Mckenzie, believes the man might have been assaulted while being questioned.
Mckenzie said a group of angry residents reacted to the death of a man who is believed to be a gang leader by vandalising the local magistrates court.
According to police, two security officers guarding the premises fled to safety as the mob continued to break into the gate, smashing windows, and set parts of the court building alight.
Western Cape police spokesperson, Frederick Van Wyk, is appealing to anyone with information about the perpetrators who stormed and vandalised the court to assist the police.
"Cases of public violence and attack on police were also registered for investigation. All these cases are still under investigation. [There has been] no arrest as yet."
Mckenzie added that the Bishop Lavis area is still volatile due to the death of the alleged gang leader.
