CAPE TOWN - National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has vowed to cleanup gang violence ravaging Cape flats areas.
He was speaking at the safer festive season launch at Belhar on Friday.
At least 900 new police recruits have been deployed in the Western Cape to help fight violent crime and gang violence.
Commissioner Masemola said over 68 gang members have been nabbed in the Western Cape in the past two weeks.
In 221 countrywide gang related murders between July and September, the province accounts for 177 deaths.
Commissioner Masemola has appealed to Cape Town communities in particular to work with police to eradicate gang wars in their areas.
"We have deployed our Anti-Gang Unit across the Province, Across Cape flats, there continuing with hard work. There's a number of gangs that we have arrested," said Masemola.
