CAPE TOWN - Western Cape MEC for Mobility Isaac Sileku said provincial traffic officers would be working closely with municipal law enforcement units to curb road accident fatalities in the province.
Sileku joined Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy on the N1 in Touws River on Thursday to provide an update on road safety since the start of December.
The MEC said road deaths had increased in the province this festive season compared to the same period in 2023.
"As per yesterday, if you compare last year and this year, we have seen an increase in terms of our driving - five fatalities as compared to last year. So, we do see an increase, but we have not unpacked it. It's of concern, and that's why we have to go back to the drawing board and look at what we can still do to make sure we bring down the numbers."
