JOHANNESBURG - Prevention and control measures have been implemented at Pollsmoor Prison to curb the potential spread of diphtheria.
The Department of Correctional Services said the move followed seven confirmed cases of the infection.
It said that to date, a total of 44 inmates had been isolated, and assessments were ongoing.
Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that usually affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat.
Symptoms include a sore throat and hoarseness, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, and difficulty breathing.
Correctional Services spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, said contact tracing efforts had been initiated.
"These efforts aim to identify individuals who may have been exposed to the seven infected inmates."
